This 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 is #47 of 55 North American-market World Championship Commemorative Edition models built and was sold new from LaMonsa Motors in Mahwah, New Jersey. It is said to have remained with a friend of the seller for 28 years before being purchased by the seller in 2013. The car is finished in black and gold over a matching interior and is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. The Commemorative Edition included unique badging, gold Speedline wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The car was displayed at the AACA Museum as part of their “Lotus: The Art of Lightness” exhibit in 2015.
World Championship Commemorative models were finished in black (L15) and featured gold accents, including a front wreath, front and rear window trim, side stripes, and “World Champion” door graphics. Approximately 185 examples were produced worldwide, and C-pillar graphics denote this as the 47th unit built for the North American market. The driver’s door was refinished below the molding line to correct a scratch, and there are paint imperfections on various body panels, and the rear bumper is wrinkled. A replacement rear bumper cover is included in the sale.
Factory 14″ Speedline alloy wheels are finished in gold and wear 205/65 front and 215/60 rear Federal Super Steel 657 tires that were installed in June 2020. The car is equipped with an independent suspension and disc brakes all around.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in black leather with gold corduroy inserts along with matching door panels, and both the seats and door panels were unique to the Commemorative Edition. A replacement headliner was installed in 2018.
The dashboard features a World Championship Commemorative Model plaque and houses a Pioneer cassette stereo. The three-spoke steering wheel is leather-wrapped and frames a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 140-mph speedometer, and gauges for voltage, oil pressure, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The horn does not work. The five-digit odometer shows 55k miles.
The 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four is equipped with a Dell’Orto intake and twin Dell’Orto carburetors. A replacement timing belt was installed in 2014, and work performed in 2020 included the installation of a replacement fuel pump. Maintenance carried out in 2021 is said to have included replacing the battery and spark plugs. Spare camshafts and high-compression pistons are included in the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Citroen-sourced five-speed manual transaxle.
The Lotus Certificate of Vehicle Provenance denotes that this car was #47 of 55 North American Commemorative Edition models built and lists a manufacture date of July 17, 1979.
